Capsule Manufacturing

Capsule manufacturing using both automatic and semi-automatic encapsulation equipment. This provides flexibility for different formulations, production quantities and project stages. Size 1, Size 0 and Size 00.

Capsule sizes

Size 1, Size 0 and Size 00

We select the capsule size according to the formulation, the desired amount of actives and the characteristics of the powder.

Important: capsule size does not determine an exact product amount in milligrams. The same capsule size can hold a different powder weight depending on bulk density, flowability and other technological properties.

~0.50 ml

Indicative volume

~19.4 mm × ~6.6 mm

Length × diameter

Smallest of the formats currently used

May suit formulations that require a smaller powder volume.

Size 0

~0.68 ml

Indicative volume

~21.7 mm × ~7.6 mm

Length × diameter

Versatile mid-size format

Widely used for food supplement formulations that need a medium capsule capacity.

Will it fit my formula?

Size 00

~0.91–0.95 ml

Indicative volume

~23.3 mm × ~8.5 mm

Length × diameter

Largest of the formats currently used

May suit formulations that need a larger powder volume in a single capsule.

How much of my formula fits?

If you know the bulk density of your blend, you can get a preliminary idea of which capsule size could suit it.

Encapsulation equipment

Two encapsulation methods — more flexibility

We use both automatic and semi-automatic encapsulation equipment. We select the production method according to the product formulation, powder properties, the planned quantity and the requirements of the specific project.

Involutus automatic capsule filling machine

Automatic equipment

Automatic encapsulation

MOQ from 200,000 capsules

An efficient solution for larger production runs — suitable for bigger batches and mass production, where the product formulation and powder properties are suitable for an automated encapsulation process.

Involutus semi-automatic capsule filling machine

Semi-automatic equipment

Semi-automatic encapsulation

MOQ 50,000 capsules

A more flexible solution for smaller production runs, product launches and projects where a large automatic run is not the optimal choice. Where technically feasible, formulations without fillers or auxiliary substances are possible.

Trade-offs

  • Lower output than automatic
  • Longer lead times
  • More expensive per unit than automatic

Not sure which production method is right?

You don't need to choose the equipment. After assessing the formulation, powder properties and planned quantity, we will select the more suitable encapsulation method for your project.

Automatic: MOQ from 200,000 capsulesSemi-automatic: MOQ 50,000 capsules

Formulations without additional fillers are possible

Where the technological properties of the formulation allow it, we can encapsulate the product without additional fillers. This means the capsule volume does not necessarily have to be filled artificially with extra substances just to make the capsule full.

Whether filler-free production is possible depends on:

  • the amount of active ingredients
  • bulk density
  • powder flowability
  • ingredient properties
  • the selected capsule size
  • the required dosing accuracy

If a formulation can technologically be manufactured without additional fillers, we can consider that production option.

Smaller production runs

Not every product has to start with a very large production quantity. Semi-automatic encapsulation equipment (MOQ 50,000 capsules) allows us to assess smaller projects more flexibly — including formulations without fillers or auxiliary substances where technically feasible.

This can be relevant for:

  • a new product launch
  • market testing
  • a niche product
  • a smaller brand
  • a new product variation

Semi-automatic encapsulation starts at an MOQ of 50,000 capsules. The exact quantity for your project is assessed individually, based on the formulation and the project.

FAQ

Capsule manufacturing questions

Capsule size alone does not determine exact fill weight. Actual fill weight depends on formulation, bulk density, particle size, granulation, powder flow and other technological parameters. Two different formulations can have different fill weights in the same capsule size.
